The Salt and the Rain
A Jewish legend
Rabbi Hanina ben Dossa is walking down the road, holding a cup full of salt in his hand. It starts to rain. He says, speaking to the heavens,
“Everyone is going to be happy because the fields will be watered, but I am sad because my salt will not be worth anything anymore.”
The rain stops immediately.
Arriving at home, Hanina starts his prayer again,
“Master of the World, it is not fair that the entire world be sad in order to make me happy.”
The rain starts to fall again.
